Non-classical nucleation theory

Units : Center for Nonlinear Phenomena and Complex Systems | ULB164

Description :

Nucleation of crystals is studied in large classes of materials presenting intermediate metastable phases such as colloids,
proteins or zeolites. Using a microscopic approach based on Density Functional Theory (DFT) along with a mesoscopic approach featuring
two order parameters (density and crystallinity) we have demonstrated that nucleation often proceeds in a non-standard, multi-step
fashion which tends to enhance the rate of the overall process.
