SOCIAMM : History, Arts and Cultures of Ancient, Medieval and Modern Societies

Research at the Center aims to provide a better understanding of European and Mediterranean societies in the period spanning from Antiquity to the 19th century. Resolutely comparative and transdisciplinary in its approach, the Center is founded on the collaboration between historians, art historians, and literary historians.

The mirror of the world. The encyclopedic spirit in relation to religion in the Christian West.

A study on the relationship between Christianity and profane learning in encyclopedic works of the Western Middle Ages. This work will deal more particularly with prologs and prefaces, as well as the organization principles of Medieval encyclopedic works. It is indeed through the reworking of the Ancient Pagan encyclopedic material - and notably with the introduction of theology - that the specificity of Medieval Christian encyclopedism in the Latin West is most pronounced.
