LoUIsE - Landscape, Urbanism, Infrastructures and Ecologies

LoUIsE - Laboratory on Landscape, Urbanism, Infrastructures and Ecologies - is focusing on the dynamics of transformations of metropolitan territories. LoUIsE is based in the Brussels-Capital Region. The research goes beyond the discipline of urbanism to take on environmental, infrastructural, and social issues concerning cities and urban territories in the larger sense. Affiliated members are indeed convinced it is flows, networks, and infrastructures that make up the global framework from which urbanism's contemporary territories are organized. Research in LoUIsE laboratory takes shape first and foremost through research made in the context of doctoral and postdoctoral theses, financed by the National Scientific Research Fund, the regional initiative Innoviris and the European Regional Development Fund.

Urban Species

Urban Species, an action-research group focusing on citizen participation, that brings together researchers from ULB 
(LoUISe, Faculty of Architecture, Grap, Faculty of Social Sciences and Philosophy) and Luca School of Arts (Intermedia). 
As part of its research and experiments, Urban Species collaborates with developers, graphic designers, citizens, 
associations, public authorities and a whole series of species, human or not, living or not, digital or not. 
Urban Species is currently engaged in two projects, p-lab (Identifying and amplifying new forms of urban participation. 
The Brussels city center pedestrian zone as a laboratory) and SUCIB (short for "Smart Urban Community Interaction Blocks"). 
Both projects are supported by Innoviris, in the framework of the Anticipate 2018-2021 program.

Metropolitan areas, citizen mobilizations and public policies

L’axe 1 du laboratoire Sasha aborde les territoires métropolitains selon une double perspective. D’une part, ils sont le lieu de déploiement de compétences, de mobilisations citoyennes et de controverses publiques dont l’espace et ses matérialités sont souvent l’enjeu. D’autre part, des politiques publiques y sont menées et opèrent dans des domaines tels que l’aménagement du territoire, l’économie, entre autres circulaire, la lutte contre la précarité sociale, l’attractivité, la culture urbaine, l’insécurité. Portées par des référentiels tels que la mixité, la participation, la durabilité, la transversalité et travaillées par des acteurs politiques, associatifs, économiques, académiques et des citoyens, ces politiques impriment leur marque aux territoires urbains et aux usages qu’ils abritent.

Les recherches menées dans le cadre de cet axe s’intéressent tant à l’étude de ces mobilisations citoyennes, des controverses urbaines qu’à l’analyse des politiques publiques, de leur mise à l’épreuve dans les territoires urbains et des empreintes qu’elles y laissent. Elles étudient également la manière dont ces deux dynamiques s’interpénètrent et s’influencent mutuellement.
