French Colonial and Post-Colonial Interests at the United Nations, 1950-1969

Units : REPI Recherche et Études en Politique Internationale | ULB704

Description :

The main objective of this research is to document and analyze French means put at the United Nations (UN) in order to keep a
political and economic bond with its former colonies, which emancipated mainly during the late 1950s and early 1960s. This study
focuses on precise aspects of French diplomacy. It seeks to capture the elements of continuity and rupture present before and during
the decolonization process within the relations that France kept with these territories. To examine this specific issue, the present
analysis is centered on the actions of the French representatives at the UN’s Expanded Programme of Technical Assistance. One
of our main question is whether or not French representatives at the UN lobbied in a way that favoured their former colonies after
their accession to independence and how these manoeuvers did manifest itself.
